We live in a world where more and more jobs are desk based.

Sitting goes against how we evolved as humans.

Keeping it to a minimum is proven to have the best effect on back pain when compared with sitting with good posture.

However, sitting with good posture takes away huge amounts of pressure from the joints in the lower back and neck therefore it can reduce pain when sitting.

So you may as well make sure you sit correctly!

This is how most of us sit.

One way or another, most of us sit in this posteriorly tilted (slumped position).

But don’t blame laziness or poor posture or a “weak core” for this.

Physics is all there is to blame.

On the image to the left, the centre of mass is behind the ischial tuberosities (your sitting bones).

Therefore, the natural position that we adopt is the slumped position.

However on this model…

The centre of mass is in front of the ischial tuberosities.

Therefore, a well aligned posture is easily maintained with little effort.

Getting into this position is not as simple as just sitting upright.

In order to do this, you need to make sure that the first thing that hits the chair when your going too sit down is your pubic bone.

This requires you to lean all the way forward when going to sit down.

Once you are in this position you can naturally stay there with very little effort with maximum comfort because your spine is the correct alignment.

My tip, change position every 30 minutes while at the desk but when you do sit use this technique and this will help you live with less back pain.
